Los Cabos FAQS

Where exactly is Los Cabos?
Los Cabos is located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula which shoots straight south from California, about 1,000 miles south of San Diego.

What's Los Cabos climate like?
Los Cabos has a desert climate warm and dry. On the Cabo San Lucas side of the peninsula, because it is on the Pacific Ocean, the temperature is slightly cooler due to the ocean breeze.
Can I drink the water?
Many hotels have installed water purification systems which would make drinking the water and brushing your teeth in the hotel safe. Upon arrival to your hotel, inquire about the water at the front desk. Most hotels without a purification system will provide a pitcher of water for your use in the hotel room. In restaurants, if you ask for water most likely the waiter will bring a bottle of purified water or a glass of water from the "garrafón". If there is ice in the glass, it has been made with purified water. As always, when in doubt, as k!

Should I rent a car?
Whether you decide to rent a car depends much on what hotel you are staying in. If you are staying on the Corridor, it is wise to rent a car, since taxis can get pretty pricey. However, if you are staying in Cabo San Lucas or San Jose, it is easy to walk to many of the common attractions. Many people decide to rent a car for day trips to Todos Santos or La Paz.

Is it safe to swim?
Swimming conditions vary from beach to beach, but generally speaking, the Pacific side is not safe to swim, while the Sea of Cortez has many more safe swimming beaches. Playa Medano, Chileno and Santa Maria are some of the most common beaches for swimming.

Who do I need to tip and how much?
Waiters are usually tipped 15% although for large parties tip may be automatically added to the bill. Bellboys usually receive one US dollar per bag. It is not necessary to tip taxi drivers.
The concierge in your hotel may expect a tip if s/he spends a while explaining about Los Cabos attractions. If you take a fishing trip, make sure to tip the captain. Typically, it is a good idea to reward good service wherever you receive it.

How can I make long-distance calls from Los Cabos?
Since long-distance calling can be very expensive from the hotels, it is suggested that you buy a phone card which can be purchased at any "minisuper" or corner grocery store. Another option is to visit one of the internet cafes where an internet phone call can be placed.
How do I avoid getting Moctezuma's revenge?
The best way to avoid getting sick is to stay away from street stands selling fruit, tacos or other local fare. Use your judgment if you notice flies hanging around or guacamole or mayonnaise that looks like it's been in the sun a little too long.

What kind of activities are there for small children?
Playing on the beach will keep small children occupied for hours. Other options are Recorcholis, a video game arcade and bowling alley, and the movie theater, Cinema Paraiso.
The local McDonalds also have a fun play place for kids.

Can I get by without knowing Spanish?
Although any attempts to speak Spanish are always appreciated by the locals, most people who live in Los Cabos speak varying levels of English.

Can I get internet access in my hotel & around town?
Although many hotels provide a telephone line, it may be difficult to find a local number for your own Internet Service Provider that can be used in Los Cabos. It is usually easier to visit an internet cafe and use the computers they offer or to bring your laptop and plug in.
